Cool Encrypter/Decrypter is a text encrypter that is used to send free encrypted messages to your friends. It encrypts the message right before your eyes with a cool display like in spy movies. The "key" is like a password. It is any combination of letters, numbers, symbols and words that you and your friend have agreed to use to encrypt and decrypt the message. No one should be able to decipher the message without the key you used to encode the message. The key can be up to 50 characters long.

To encrypt a message, type or paste your message into the text area below and press the "Encrypt" button. Make sure you have typed in the key to encrypt the message with. You can then copy the encrypted message into an email or a word document to send to your friend.

This encrypting/decrypting algorithm has been tested to work with cross browser support between Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. It has been tested to work between the web page, a text document, a word document and emails. There is no guarantee that the encryption process or the decryption process will work correctly with your configuration, computer or program. Known Issues

(5/25/06) Yahoo Web Mail and SBC Yahoo Web Mail

Sometimes Yahoo Web Mail or SBC Yahoo Web Mail will decide to split a word into two by putting a hyphen (-) at the edge of a line and then putting the rest of the word on the next line. The problem with this is that when you copy the encrypted message, it copies this hyphen along with it. So when the decryption process comes to the hyphen, because there is an extra letter in the encrypted text, the decryption process messes up. There is no fix for this problem at this time.

If the SBC Yahoo Mail is read in Outlook or Outlook Express it doesn't seem to have this problem. Also Hotmail Web Mail and Gmail Web Mail do not appear to have this problem.

Bug Fixes and Changes

(7/22/06) Spaces Are Now Encrypted by the cypher

The mission with this update was to encrypt the spaces while still keeping the cool display when encrypting/decrypting. The reason for encrypting spaces is so that it is harder for anyone to try and decipher the encrypted text without knowing the password. With the spaces gone they can't try to guess at one, two, or three letter words.

The problem with the browsers (especially Netscape and Firefox) was that when you remove spaces in a text the browsers start moving text up and down lines so that the display of converting the letters was not as visually appealing. This has been fixed by adding our own word-wrap to the textbox. Linefeeds were added at the end of lines and a place mark was inserted so that we could remove the linefeeds after decrypting the text.

(7/21/06) New Key Length

The key length can now be 50 characters long. This makes for added security. The longer the key, the harder it will be for a hacker to be able to brute force the encrypted text.

(6/18/06) Netscape Fix

Cool Encrypter/Decrypter now works with Netscape 6.0 and above. It has not been tested with Netscape versions below 6.0. Please let me know if you have tested it.

(6/8/06) Encryption Algorithm Updated

Previously the encryption algorithm allowed for any characters to be used for the key, but the key would only change each letter in the text by a difference of up to 10 characters. Also previously the key was not case sensitive.

Now the key is case sensitive. You must use the proper case or the text will not be decrypted correctly. Also, the key will now change each letter in the text by a difference of up to 80 characters. This makes it more difficult for the encryption to be broken or found out without the key. My question is: With a possible difference of 1 to 80 characters and a key of 20 characters in length, how long would it take for a computer to decrypt the text with a brute force attack (searching through every possible key combination)?

It has been pointed out to me that my cipher is very similar to the Vigenre cipher created in the 1500s. By reading the article on the Vigenre cipher I also found out that my initial encryption method that only encrypted the characters by a difference of 10 chararacters was very similar to the Gronsfeld cipher.

(5/23/06) MS Word Smart Quotes

MS Word has an auto-text feature known as "Smart Quotes" or "Curly Quotes". Word automatically changes quotes, apostrophes and other symbols into prettier looking symbols that aren't part of the regular ASCII characters.

Hotmail Web Mail, Yahoo and SBC Web Mail, do not know how to interpret these "Smart" characters correctly. When mail is read with these Web Mail clients they put other funny characters in place of them.

The encryption key in Cool Encrypter/Decrypter previously took into account these smart quotes and other smart characters which worked fine. But when you copied the encrypted text from one of these Web-based mail programs it now had extra characters. So the decryption process wouldn't work correctly because there were extra characters in the encrypted text.

The problem has been fixed. Now Cool Encrypter/Decrypter ignores smart characters from Word and ignores the added special characters from these Web-based mail programs. You will still see the funny characters from Hotmail and Yahoo Mail but this is a bug with those Web Mail clients not being able to recognize smart quotes properly. Gmail web mail does not have this problem.
