SMS stands for Short Message System. It is the system used for text messages on cell phones. It allows 160 characters to be sent to a cell phone.

I have been looking for good SMS Search Services available for mobile phone users and here is a list of what I have come up with. There are many great text alert services out there. But I was looking for something different. I was looking for services that let you send a text and then you get valuable information sent back to you.

Yahoo SMS (92466)

Yahoo SMS lets you send a text message to Yahoo at 92466 (Yahoo). Then Yahoo sends a text message back to your cellular phone providing valuable information such as local listings, weather, wifi hotspot locator, area code finder, zip code finder and dictionary.

For a demo go to: http://mobile.yahoo.com/search/smsdemo

Google SMS (46645)

Google SMS lets you send a text message to Google at 46645 (GOOGL). Then Google sends a text message back giving you valuable information such as local listings, weather, movie times, translation, area code finder, price finder, dictionary and more.

For a demo go to: http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/mobile/sms/

CONS:
  • Sometimes I send a text message to Google SMS and I never get a reply.
  • One time I was looking for the phone number to a resturaunt in Monterey. I texted Google with "Rosines 93940". Google replied saying it could not find the listing. So I texted Google about 5 more times with different spellings even though I spelled it correctly the first time. I gave up and tried Yahoo. Yahoo correctly gave me the address and phone number.

4INFO (44636)

4INFO lets you send a text message to 44636 (4INFO) and then they send a text message back to your phone with valuable information such as local listings, sports scores, wifi hotspot locations, package tracking, weather, flight status, tv listings, drink recipes, price finder, jokes and more.

Smarter.com SMS (610-SMARTER)

Smarter.com offers a service to give you product prices for the product you are looking for at a store. Just send a text message with the product part number to 610-7627837 (610-SMARTER).

For more info go to: http://www.smarter.com/sms/

Synfonic.com (16504307183)

Synfonic.com lets you send a text message to 16504307183 and then they reply with valuable information including local listings, gas prices, wifi hotspot finder, sports scores, movie times, SF Bay Area traffic and more. Some services are only available if you register. For more info go to: http://www.synfonic.com/

Send SMS from Computer

The best program to send SMS text messages from your computer in my opinion is AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) or AOL (America Online). Many websites offer the ability to send messages to cell phones but generally there is no way for the recipient to reply to your text message. But AIM lets you chat back and forth through SMS. Other services such as Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger also offer SMS to cell phones, however, both of those don't seem to work with every cell phone. But AIM seems to work with every cell phone. Be careful! I am now getting unsolicited junk text messages from Limbo.com (41414) which followed my sending a price querry to Google (46636) and another site (46645)whose name I don't remember. Apparently one of them puts your phone on a junk list!

What a pain!
