Location
Where
Combination of local gas prices, weather from accuweather, starbucks locator, Yelp, Events,
Traffic conditions, yellow pages and movie times.
My favorite part of this app used to be HeyWhatsThat, a mountain locator, to find out about
the mountain peaks near you. But that is being removed in the newest version
|
|
AroundMe
Find banks, bars, coffee, gas stations, hospitals, hotels, movie theatresparking, pubs,
restaurants, supermarkets, taxis, weather. Very simple interface.
|
|
Have2P
This application helps you find restrooms near your current location.
Cons: The problem is in most areas not enough people have entered in
restrooms, so it seems like just a random list of restaurants, namely
Starbucks and stores. If you click on a location it lets you rate the
restroom with thumbs up or down (which isn't a good rating system, but
it also lets you add a comment. The map function is not good, because
it takes you to google maps and drops pins down, but then the restrooms
are no longer updated. You have to leave google maps and go back to
Have2P.
|
|
SitOrSquat: Bathroom Finder
This application is slightly better than Have2P, except for the fact
that sometimes it pauses for a long time trying to load a map of New
York even though I am in California. It uses Google maps within the
app though so it updates the restroom list as you scroll around.
Unfortunately, not enough people update it so it is mainly a list
of Starbucks, gas stations and other stores. If you click on a
restroom you can rate it with 1 to 5 stars. Also users can upload
photos of the restroom and the hours are sometimes listed.

Mail
Maps
Google Earth
Almost just like Google Earth for the computer.
Beautiful satellite maps of the earth. Spin the globe.
Zoom in. Tilt the terrain by placing two fingers on the screen and sliding down.
It has labels for cities and places, but there seems to be no option to turn on street maps.
|
|
MapQuest 4 Mobile
I like this map app. It has really clear and simple maps. It shows
the highway exit numbers clearly.
Get directions. At the bottom is a carousel of icons for hotels,
restaurants, shopping centers, gas stations, Coffee shops, Post offices,
parking garages, grocery stores, schools and traffic.
|
|

|

the correct spot then you press the key on the piano to play the song

more songs from the artists I like.

|
Free Wi-Fi
By YOUniversal Ideas - Free Wi-Fi Locator. Uses your location to find nearby
wi-fi hotspots or you can search by zip code or city.
Cons: If you click on the address of a hotspot the app takes you to google
maps and just shows one hotspot, not multiple hotspots. Then you have to exit
google maps and go back to the app if you want to see more hotspots.
Also not very many hotspots are listed, but this is because not enough users
are sending in public hotspots.
More cons: The problem with these apps is they don't download a huge database
of wi-fi hotspots into your iPod or iPhone. Instead they grab the info from the
Internet. Therefore you need Internet access. So if you have an iPhone this
might not be a problem because the iPhone can use 3G or Edge network. But for
the iPod Touch you can't get a list of hotspots unless you are currently connected
to wifi already. So for best use with an iPod Touch, BEFORE you leave for a
certain city you need to look up the hotspots at home or maybe starbucks.

Wi-Fi Finder
By JiWire Inc. - Free Wi-Fi Finder. Uses your location to find nearby
wi-fi hotspots or you can search by zip code or city.
Cons: If you click on the address of a hotspot the app takes you to google
maps and just shows one hotspot, not multiple hotspots. Then you have to exit

Then you can save or email the note.

Transfer Files
I tried all kinds of transfer files between PC/MAC and iPhone/iPod Touch
applications. Many of them are very similar. I am including many of them
because they all have features and benefits at reading file formats that
some of the others may not do.
The problem with all of these apps is they aren't very useful unless
you jailbreak your phone. If you don't jailbreak your device then each app
just gets its own documents folder that is not shared with any other application.
That's right, you can't access your regular pictures, video or audio folders.
And the apps can't share folders between each other. But if you jailbreak your device
then you can use any folder on the iphone or iPod Touch. Then again, most of these
apps use only their own folder anyway. If you have experience with these apps
please let me know.
Note: If you have the new iPhone OS then you can transfer images to and
from your device by accessing the device in My Computer under "Scanners and Cameras"
just like you would with a regular camera hooked to your computer through USB or
a USB flash drive.
iPhoneBrowser
This app does not download to your iPhone. It is an app for PC
computers. You hook your iPod to the PC via USB and then open
iPhoneBrowser and you can browse folders and transfer files to/from
the iPhone. To transfer a file to the device you have to use drag and
drop. But to copy a file from the iPhone to your PC you have to right
click on the file and click Backup File. Then you can
view your files by clicking on Functions -> View Backup Files.
In the folder DCIM/.MISC I can see pictures. I can preview the images
in the program. And in the folder
DCIM/100Apple I can see pictures. In the folder iTunes_Control/Music
I can see folders with songs in them, but I cannot tell what the songs are because
they have random file names. But I can click on Preview and listen
to the song.
Cons: This program would be more useful with a jailbroken device.
|
|
iPhone Explorer
This app does not download to your iPhone. It is very similar to
iPhoneBrowser, but there is a version for MAC and for PC.
You hook your iPod to the PC via USB and then open
iPhone Explorer and you can browse folders and transfer files to/from
the iPhone or iPod Touch. You must use drag and drop to copy files. There
is no copy and paste under the edit menu.
In the folder DCIM/.MISC I can see pictures. I can preview the images
in the program. And in the folder
DCIM/100Apple I can see pictures. In the folder iTunes_Control/Music
I can see folders with songs in them, but I cannot tell what the songs are because
they have random file names. But I can click on the filename and listen
to the song.
Cons: This program would be more useful with a jailbroken device.
|
|
DiskAid
I do not recommend downloading this program. It is almost the same
as iPhoneBrowser and iPhoneExplorer and it lets you download the app
to your PC or MAC for free, but after 14 days it wants you to pay $10
to register it. And I can no longer preview or copy and paste files
after 14 days.
Also requires XP Service Pack 2.

|
FileAid
This app lets you transfer files from the iPhone or iPod Touch
over wifi using ftp in a web browser like IE. However, the cons
are you can only use a folder that was created just for this app.
And you can only access the files in the folder through this app.
Click on what looks like a sync button (two arrows going left and right)
and it will tell you which address to type into the web browser on your PC.
Something like: ftp://192.168.1.100:2121
You can drap and drop files with ftp or you can use copy and paste.
Features reading of these file formats in the app on your device:
Images (JPG, PNG, GIF, TIFF and others)
PDF,
MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint),
iWork (Pages, Numbers and Keynotes),
OpenDocument (OpenOffice) (Text, Spreadsheet, Presentation),
Plain Text and RTF (Rich Text Format),
Audio (MP3 VBR, AAC, Audible, Apple Lossless, AIFF, WAV, CAF),
Video (standard iPhone formats : H.264, MPEG-4),
Web Archives,
HTML files,
ZIP Archives.
NOTE: One benefit of installing DiskAid above is that then when you
copy files to your iphone using FileAid (this app) it puts it in the
DiskAid folder. The DiskAid folder can be read by iPhoneBrowser
and iPhone Explorer.

Files Lite
This app lets you transfer files from the iPhone or iPod Touch
over wifi using http in a web browser like IE. However, the cons
are you can only use a folder that was created just for this app.
And you can only access the files in the folder through this app. The lite
version also limits you to 200MB.
Click on the app
and it will tell you which address to type into the web browser on your PC
or MAC. Something like: http://192.168.1.100:8080
In the web browser you can upload a file to the device by clicking Browse.
You can read files on your PC by clicking on them. They open and then you can save them
to your computer.
Features reading of these file formats in the app on your device:
- Most Microsoft Office document are viewable, including limited support for xml documents (Office 2007).
- Image, movie and audio file support is limited to those formats supported by the iPhone OS.
- Apple iWork documents are fully supported.
- PDF.
